Biography

Carl Thompson joined The Park School in 2022 as an English teacher in the Upper School after having taught at Cardinal O’Hara High School, Villa Maria College, and the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Thompson’s teaching is grounded in the environmental humanities, an interdisciplinary field that draws from the arts, sciences, philosophy, and history to better understand our place in the world and to articulate our shared responsibility as global citizens, and he is particularly interested in courses on climate fiction, American literature and history, trans-Atlantic literature, literature and science, citizenship and civics, and environmental and social justice. In his courses, he emphasizes that writing and literary study are experiential practices that are fundamentally communal, embodied, and performative.

Originally from the Detroit area, Dr. Thompson first came to Western New York in 2012 to earn his MA in English Literature at SUNY Buffalo. He also has degrees in English literature from Loyola University Chicago (BA) and the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (PhD).
