Biography

A drummer, percussionist and composer, John is one of the most sought after musicians in the Western New York region and regularly collaborates with the top musicians in the area. He is the leader of several projects including the bands JBQ, Star People and The Morgan Street Stompers. He is a collaborator in the Buffalo Jazz Composers Workshop. John holds a PhD in Music Composition from SUNY at Buffalo and a MM in Percussion Performance from SUNY Fredonia.

His music has been performed by an eclectic array of musicians, including The Amherst Saxophone Quartet, Leroy Jenkins, the New Jazz Orchestra of Buffalo, the New York New Music Ensemble and the UB Percussion Ensemble. Performance credits include Lester Bowie, Roswell Rudd, Bobby Previte, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Bobby Militello, and the Buffalo Jazz Collective. His most recent album “Revolution Blues” by JBQ features original compositions for Jazz quintet. The piano trio recording, “Refractions”, features the music of Thelonious Monk with Michael McNeill and Danny Ziemann. John is a 2013 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship Award recipient in Music/Sound and a New York State Council on the Arts Individual Artist Composer Commission with Christopher Jentsch 2015. John endorses Zildjian cymbals and Dragonfly Percussion mallets and beaters.
