Founded in 1912, The Park School of Buffalo has the distinction of being one of the oldest Progressive schools in the country. Park is an independent, co-educational school serving approximately 300 students in Pre-K-12. 

Park is seeking a full-time Instrumental Instructor to work with students in Grades 4-12. The person will be responsible for teaching students how to play band instruments at various levels and understand music theory within a school setting. They will lead rehearsals, prepare students for performances, and manage the band program. Their duties will include lesson planning, student evaluation, instrument maintenance, and fostering a positive learning environment. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Instruction: Teach students how to play band instruments (woodwinds, brass, percussion), and develop their musical skills. 
  • Curriculum: Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with educational standards. 
  • Rehearsals: Conduct rehearsals, select music of varied styles and genres, and prepare students for performances. 
  • Performance: Organize and direct concerts, parades, and other band-related events, including but not limited to NYSSMA.
  • Assessment: Evaluate student progress, provide feedback, and track their development. 
  • Instrument Management: Oversee instrument maintenance, repairs, and inventory. 
  • Classroom Management: Create a positive and engaging learning environment. 
  • Collaboration: Work with other music teachers, school administrators, and parents. 
  • Professional Development: Stay updated on best practices in music education.

Requirements

Must have classroom experience with, and affinity for, students of this age. Strong pedagogy, differentiation, and developmental awareness required. Candidates must strike the right balance between setting high expectations and nurturing their students’ growth and have the following qualities:

  • An ability to inspire students and bring a joyful, positive attitude about children to work every day;
  • A willingness to become active members of the Park community;
  • A drive to bring ‘real life’ experience into their classroom and extend the classroom beyond the school walls;
  • The reflectiveness needed to assess personal classroom practices and avail themselves of professional development and leadership opportunities;
  • A belief in Park’s mission and in creating a nurturing classroom environment with high expectations;
  • Excellent formal and informal communication skills with students, parents, and the administration;
  • A pedagogical philosophy that is student-centered and demonstrates comfort differentiating instruction;
  • A creative mindset comfortable with problem-solving, innovating, and an emphasis on growth

    • Moderate amount of walking across campus is required
    • Able to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.
